On average, each of the 64 matches was watched by 49,670 fans, with Sunday's final between the Netherlands and Spain attracting a crowd of just under 85,000.

Overall, 3.18 million people went through the turnstiles at the nine World Cup venues.

USA 1994, with 3.59 million people in attendance across just 52 games, and Germany 2006, with 3.36 million supporters going to grounds, are the two best attended events.

Fifa estimated that around 700 million people watched the final on television, while certain games in the tournament have smashed viewing records in individual countries.

Germany's semi-final clash with Spain, for example, was the first time more than 30 million people had watched a single event in German television history.
