(acf)

Spain 1-0 Portugal

David Villa's fourth goal at SA2010 broke Portuguese hearts but kept Spain on course for their first World Cup triumph

Portugal, who had not conceded a goal in their previous three games at the tournament, frustrated their Iberian neighbours for more than an hour before Villa's 63rd minute effort.

And to compound a miserable night for Carlos Queiroz's side, Portugal finished with 10 men after Ricardo Costa was sent off after clashing with Joan Capdevila.

But it was not all good news for Spain - or Liverpool.

Fernando Torres has looked like a man who has had two knee operations in the past few months at this World Cup.

Two years to the day since his goal ended 44 years of hurt for Spain by winning Euro 2008, Torres started against Portugal despite some lacklustre performances in South Africa.

But after a first minute effort that required a fine save by Eduardo, the Liverpool striker faded badly and was replaced with more than half an hour of the game remaining.

There has to be some doubt whether Torres, who is clearly out of sorts, will feature in Saturday's quarter-final with Paraguay in Johannesburg.

Fortunately for Spain, however, Villa looked decidedly more threatening.

He tormented and teased Portugal's defence throughout and caused countless problems.

But this was by no means a one-sided contest.

Portugal almost broke the deadlock with their first serious attack midway through the first half.

After a brilliant run, Fabio Coentrao teed up Tiago, whose 25-yard blast was pushed into the air by Iker Casillas.

Spain's keeper was forced to make a quick recovery with Hugo Almeida threatening to pounce.

Casillas produced another nervous performance between the posts, and was lucky to escape after spilling a 35-yard free-kick from his Real Madrid team-mate Ronaldo in the 29th minute.

Although Spain enjoyed plenty of possession, they struggled to breakdown a well marshalled Portuguese defence.

And it was the Spanish who were looking vulnerable when Almeida got his head on the end of Simao Sabrosa's dangerous cross yet somehow failed to find the target from six-yards.

After Carles Puyol almost found his own net, Spain burst into action with Villa finally providing the breakthrough with an effort which went in off the woodwork after great play by Xavi.

Portugal were disappointing in qualifying. They have been just as disappointing in South Africa.

They bowed out with 10 men after Costa was involved in an off-the-ball incident with Joan Capdevila with two minutes remaining.

Spain (4-5-1): Casillas; Ramos, Pique, Puyol, Capdevila; Alonso (Machena 90), Xavi, Iniesta, Busquets, Villa (Pedrito 87); Torres (Llorente 58).
Subs (not used): Reina, Valdes, Albiol, Arbeloa, Fabregas, Javi Martinez, Silva, Navas, Mata.

Portugal (4-5-1): Eduardo; Alves, Costa, Carvalho, Coentrao; Simao (Liedson 72), Meireles, Pepe (Mendes 72), Tiago, Ronaldo 6; Almeida (Danny 58).
Subs (not used): Beto, Fernandes, Ferreira, Rolando, Miguel, Duda, Veloso, Amorim, Deco

Martino overjoyed at "unfair" win

Delighted Paraguay boss Gerardo Martino acknowledged the "unfair" nature of the way his side reached the last eight

The South Americans were level with Japan for 120 minutes before spot-kicks were required to produce a winner.

Eventually, la Albiroja triumphed 5-3 when they kept their cool after Japan's Yuichi Komano struck his effort against the bar.

But following the tension of the shoot-out, the relief was clear to see on the winning manager's face.

"The reason for my tears is because this is an emotional moment for me," said Martino.

"Everybody knows that penalties are unfair, but that's how the match had to be decided and I am happy that we won.

"Japan played as they usually do, they gave us difficulties, but what is important now is that we are through to the next round.

"For now, we are having a party with our fans back in Paraguay. I can imagine the excitement and celebration back there."

Paraguay 0-0 Japan (5-3 pens)

Oscar Cardozo was the coolest man in South Africa as his decisive penalty fired Paraguay into their first World Cup quarter-finals

The Benfica striker collected an impressive 34 goals for Benfica to help them win the Portuguese league last season, but he will never produce a more crucial goal for his country.

Cardozo demonstrated all the hallmarks of a cold-bloodied killer to cause coach Gerardo Martino to weep openly with joy, while the whole of Japan shed tears of bitter disappointment.

It needed the first penalty shoot-out of the finals to separate the two teams after two hours of the most mind-numbing encounter served up in South Africa over the last three weeks.

It was the first time either side had ever had to suffer the nerve-shredding experience of a shoot-out after barely creating a chance in open play.

And it was the Blue Samurai who cracked first in the spot kicks with Yuichi Komano discovering just how painful it is to be the unfortunate culprit known as the man who let his country down.

The Japanese defender ended Takeshi Okada's dream of taking his side to the semi-finals on behalf of the whole of Asia when he smashed his spot kick off the cross bar after team mates Yasuhito Endo and captain Makoto Hasebe had held their nerve.

But Cardozo, who has barely been used in the finals by Martino swaggered up to roll home his spot kick and deceive Japanese 'keeper Eiji Kawashima to spark scenes of wild delight among his team mates.

Both teams were on a roll, having not been expected to get into the last 16, but instead of riding their luck, they were gripped by fear for large periods and penalties always looked like the only way to split the two sides.

The chance of entering unchartered territory of the quarter finals seemed to hang like lead weights around the necks of both sets of players.

There was no sign of the adventure Japan showed to beat Denmark in their final group game to ensure progress from the group stage.

Only in fleeting first half moments did they threaten and give Paraguay 'keeper Justo Villar any awkward moments.

The most dangerous came when Daisuke Matsui let fly from fully 30-yards to try to beat the keeper, only to see his shot crash back off the crossbar.

Keisuke Honda wasted another chance, firing wide from the edge of the area and Paraguay were equally disappointing and a shadow of the attacking side that roared into the final 16.

Lucas Barrios had their two best chances, but was twice denied by Kawashima as both sides increasingly seemed willing to accept their fate from spot kicks.

After three previous failures to make the last eight, and the agony of losing to the first ever golden goal from Laurent Blanc in France '98, Paraguay will have to improve drastically if they are to make the semi-finals.

Paraguay (4-3-3): Villar; Morel, Da Silva, Alcaraz, Bonet; Ortigoza (E Barreto 75), Vera, Riveros; Barrios, Santa Cruz (Cardozo 94) Benitez (Valdez 60).
Subs not used: Veron, Caniza, Cardozo, Santana, D Barreto, Torres, Bobadilla, Gamarra, J Caceres.

Japan (4-5-1): Kawashima; Komano, Nakazawa, Tanaka, Nagamoto; Abe (K Nakamura 80), Endo, Matsui (Okazaki 65), Hasebe, Okubo (Tamada 105); Honda.
Subs not used: Narazaki, Uchida, S Nakamura, Yano, Iwamasa, Konno, Morimito, Inamoto, Kawaguchi

(A-161/A-187/CA-02) ***

World Cup Divers a Disgrace

I am fed up and tired of seeing the disgraceful diving that is going on in football. Grown men - big, powerful grown men falling in apparent agony to the floor as if they had been shot. It was so obvious yestarday too in the Brazil v Chile game and it was well managed by England's only representative left in the World Cup, Howard Webb. However I know that other referees will fall for the blatant dives in such important games.

Three men in particular struck me as cheats yestarday. Maicon, Lucio and Luis Fabiano.

Maicon is a massive man. Yestarday when running close to two Chile players he simply jumped to the floor. Replays show that at the time the two Chile players were about a foot away from Maicon and didn't touch him at all. Maicon was complaining on the floor - seemingly convinced that he had been hacked down. The referee knew that it was a dive and waved play on. But I say surely if they are allowed to get away with persistant diving the cheats will continue to do it. The referees are too afraid to caution the big name players. Understandabley, they want to avoid controversy, but if it isn't stopped now, I fear it never will.

Lucio, also a massive man and delivers committed and crunching tackles to his opponents, yet when he feels the slightest of touches to him, he too falls to the ground and in the latest Brazil game it was as clear as day that he was once again trying to cheat the referee.

Fabiano was just a small one yesterday, but it annoys me because so many International footballers do it. A tiny bit of contact to the back whilst jumping for the ball, and Fabiano clutches his face as if he had been punched in the mouth.

I absolutely hate it when footballers do this, and I know it isn't just the players named above, but the referees and FIFA need to clamp down on this and punish players more severely -make an example of someone. Oh yes, and bring in technology to the game, so we know for sure.

Tottenham Hotspur (2012/2013) Dan Timnas England

Saya menjadi Pelatih Timnas Inggris

Brazil 3-0 Chile

Robinho, who has become something of a forgotten man at Eastlands after spending the last few months on loan at Santos, capped a clinical performance by Dunga's team with a brilliant third goal

Chile's exciting attacking style at the tournament has won them many new admirers and have been dubbed everyone's favourite 'other team'.

But their adventure came to an end as they found themselves on the receiving end of Brazil's best performance in South Africa yet.

On this evidence, it will take something special to stop Dunga's boys from going all the way as Brazil moved up another gear.

Chile have been a breath of fresh air under Marcelo Bielsa and they showed they were far from nervous at the prospect of sharing the pitch with the tournament favourites.

Brazil keeper Julio Cesar was forced to make a smart save to deny Humberto Suazo in the 13th minute before the favourites turned on the style.

Gilberto Silva forced a fine stop from Claudio Bravo with a powerful 30-yard effort before Premier League ref Howard Webb waved away strong Brazil claims for a 28th minute penalty.

Webb ignored the appeals after Lucio appeared to have been fouled inside the area by Pablo Contreras.

That only served to upset Brazil, with Kaka, back in the side after serving a suspension, booked for a trip 30-yards from his goal.

But just when their frustrations looked set to boil over, Dunga's side seized control with two goals in three minute before half time.

Defender Juan produced a 35th minute breakthrough with a thumping header following a corner by Maicon.

Chile had barely recovered when they found themselves 2-0 down and heading out of Africa following a lightning counter attack in which Fabiano rounded the keeper after great play by Robinho and Kaka.

Chile came out fighting in the second half and dominated possession before Robinho put them out of their misery.

A stunning 59th minute run from Benfica's Ramires committed defenders and opened up space on the edge of the box for Robinho.

And he showed that he still has magic in his boots as he curled the ball into the top corner of the net, to score one of the best goals of the tournament so far.

Chile were all over the place and were fortunate not to fall further behind after a 35-yard screamer by Daniel Alves as Brazil finally showed their true class after an unspectacular start to South Africa 2010.

We'll take it to Spain

The Iberian derby, which takes place on Tuesday, always looked like one of the ties of the second round once the group games had concluded.

And while Spain may be favourites, Portugal have enough skill to cause their neighbours problems.

"I believe it's going to be a great game of football, a game with a lot of creativity, imagination, speed and great moves," said Queiroz.

"At this stage, the round of 16, I expect a great show of football.

"This is going to be extremely difficult. Spain and Portugal play a style of football that, although somewhat similar, there are a number of differences between the two teams.

"It is a regional rivalry between the teams and it is also a social, cultural and historical rivalry between two nations," he said.

"Therefore the game between Portugal and Spain is always a mouth-watering game, I'm sure of that. Just like 'derbies' between, say, England and Germany."

In previous tournaments - and even during their 0-0 draws with Brazil and Cote d'Ivoire at SA2010 - Portugal have been accused of negativity.

Yet Queiroz says his side will try and take the game to their opponents.

"We want to win this game from the very first minute," he said.

"We don't know whether the duration of the game will be 90 minutes, 120 minutes or a penalty shoot-out. When you play a game of this nature, all that counts is that we move forward and score.

"My philosophy is that in a game of this nature, as a coach you have to take some risks.

"Our passes have to be decisive if we want to defeat Spain. We have to defend well, attack well and a Portuguese team always has to be on the attack.

"They are European champions but they are 11 players, just like us, and I expect it to be a great match. Our chances of progressing are as good as theirs.

"They have a good team but we also have a good team with first-class players at our disposal."

Netherlands 2-1 Slovakia

Slovakia pulled a goal back from the penalty spot through Robert Vittek with the last kick of the game to at least finish their campaign on a positive note.

Holland manager Bert van Marwijk will be hoping the impressive run proves to be a lucky omen considering the last time the Netherlands secured four successive wins they went on to reach the final in 1974.

Slovakia started well and spurned a brace of early chances before spending the remainder of the game toiling to keep their opponents in check.

Erik Jendrisek shot just over the crossbar in the opening two minutes and Marek Hamsik also fired just wide. But the Netherlands were content to soak up the pressure and break from deep, with the pace of Robin van Persie and Robben a constant threat.

Sneijder and Van Persie both wasted golden opportunities to break the deadlock as the Netherlands began to exert their superiority on the contest and it came as no surprise when Robben opened the scoring with a fine individual effort.

He is supposed to have a suspect hamstring but there seemed no problem as he sped down the wing before cutting inside in trademark fashion and drilling a low drive into the bottom corner.

Robben's brilliance left Slovakia with a mountain to climb. They stuck to the task well and showed admirable spirit and commitment, but Van Marwijk's side were always in control and seemed content to protect their lead, even if their lack of desire to kill the game off will be of slight concern to supporters.

They had to rely on a mistake from Jan Mucha to allow Sneijder to make it 2-0 on 82 minutes and even though Vittek pulled one back in stoppage time there was no way back for the Slovakians.

Manager Vladimir Weiss will be disappointed but he shouldn't be. Slovakia over-achieved to get beyond the group stage and the memories of beating current holders Italy can be cherished forever.

Netherlands (4-5-1): Stekelenburg; Van Der Weil, Heitinga, Mathijsen, Van Bronckhorst; Kuyt, Van Bommel, Sneijder (Afellay 90), De Jong, Robben (Elia 71); Van Persie (Huntelaar 80).

Slovakia (4-4-2): Mucha; Pekarik, Skrtel, Durica, Zabavnik (Jakubko 86); Stoch, Weiss, Kucka, Jendrisek (Kopunek 72); Vittek, Hamsik (Sapara 86).

Slovakia and Chile eye upsets

Chile and Slovakia will be driven by the shared desire to spring an upset when they tackle respective rivals Brazil and the Netherlands in the Round of 16 on Monday.

Both the Brazilians and Dutch enjoy a worldwide reputation for spectacular play, but arguably no team at the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ has been more attractive going forward, not to mention more resolutely attack-minded, than Chile. That said, Marcelo Bielsa's men will be put to a gruelling test by their fellow South Americans, whose strength and serenity particularly caught the eye during the group stage. The current Brazil line-up may not yet stand comparison with some of their sparkling predecessors, but their results have been no less convincing.

The Netherlands are gracing South Africa with players every bit as gifted as previous vintages and they hope to break new ground by lifting the Trophy for the first time. Bert van Marwijk's troops have gone an impressive 22 matches without defeat and now find themselves just four games away from football’s ultimate prize, but they will need to be wary of a fearless Slovakia side, who so memorably disposed of holders Italy 3-2.

The matches
Netherlands-Slovakia, Durban, 16.00
Brazil-Chile, Johannesburg (Ellis Park), 20.30

The big game
Brazil-Chile
This all-South American showdown speaks volumes for the success CONMEBOL sides have enjoyed in South Africa, though it will be Brazil feeling the more confident thanks to their 46 victories in their 65 previous meetings between the countries. The five-time world champions' coach Dunga has altered his team's style of play without compromising their winning mentality, giving them an almost European feel characterised by power and efficiency. That transformation owes much to the fact that 20 of his 23 players ply their club trade on the Old Continent, yet there have still been characteristic Brazilian flourishes, flowing from the likes of Maicon, Elano and Luis Fabiano.

The rich seam of talent continues to run deep and Dunga was even able to do without Kaka, Elano and Robinho for the goalless draw against Portugal. Brazil give the impression of a steamroller that is gathering momentum and will be difficult to stop, particularly since Chile coach Bielsa will need to turn to youth after the 2-1 loss to Spain left him with three players suspended. Centre-back duo Gary Medel and Waldo Ponce will be notable absentees, but South Africa 2010 has hardly been devoid of upsets thus far.

In focus
Favourites (NED) v Underdogs (SV
Independent since 1993, Slovakia may have taken a while to emerge from the shadow cast by the former Czechoslovakia, but there can be no disputing their steady progress. Fourth in their qualifying section ahead of France 1998, third on the road to Korea/Japan 2002 and second four years ago, they continued their upward trajectory by sealing top spot for South Africa 2010 thanks to a team built on sturdy foundations. Forwards Stanislav Sestak of Bochum and Robert Vittek of Ankaragucu – the latter scorer of a double against Italy – are the brightest lights in the side along with Napoli playmaker Marek Hamsik and Liverpool stopper Martin Skrtel, and having disposed of La Nazionale they must turn their attentions to another European powerhouse. Netherlands coach Bert van Marwijk boasts a squad brimming with star quality and has succeeded in getting those gifted individuals to play as a unit, giving the likes of Robin van Persie, Rafael van der Vaart, Wesley Sneijder and Arjen Robben unshakable belief that they can go all the way. Slovakia, on the other hand, have exceeded expectations and have nothing to lose.

What they said
"I’d compare this generation with the one that reached the World Cup semi-finals in 1998. Back then I was happy with that result, but this time I’d be very disappointed to finish second,” Phillip Cocu, Netherlands assistant coach.

LIGA SUPER DIMULAI 18 SEPTEMBER

''Kami masih membenahi beberapa hal.

Tapi, nanti pasti kami berikan," kilah alumnus ITS Surabaya itu. (ru/c4/diq) sumber:

Maradona plays it cool

Argentina coach Diego Maradona has shrugged off concerns over his side's controversial opening goal in their 3-1 win over Mexico

The Albicelestes appeared under the cosh somewhat during the opening stages of the game at Soccer City as Mexico launched a wave of attacks, with Carlos Salcido striking the crossbar eight minutes in.

But the game changed complexion in the 25th minute when a poor clearance from Mexico stopper Oscar Perez fell for Lionel Messi to chip the ball forward for Carlos Tevez to nod home.

Tevez was clearly in an off-side position by about a yard but linesman Stefano Ayroldi allowed the goal to stand to the frustration of the Mexicans who rapidly conceded again eight minutes later as Gonzalo Higuain pounced on a defensive mistake.

Maradona, though, simply said the goal was poetic justice for Messi and the Argentina side, after their little superstar has been targeted for some rough house treatment.

"He (Mexico coach Javier Aguirre) must have felt the same as we have felt when Messi gets kicked around and the referee does not act," Maradona said.

"Whenever Messi has the ball everyone is trying to kick his legs. What is being done to him is a scandal - they don't even look for the ball they try to kick him.

"I understand the Mexicans' feelings but there is a limit to everything."

Having opened the scoring controversially, Tevez finished off the contest in the most emphatic fashion seven minutes after the break as he produced a spectacular curling strike that gave Perez no chance.

"I was lucky enough to see the goal open up for me and score a couple of important goals, although it wasn't easy tonight," Tevez told FIFA.com.

"We struggled to get into the game in the first few minutes. We knew that Mexico would pressurise us and that they had the potential to harm us.

"We couldn't build any attacks because we didn't have the ball, but in the end we managed to play well and take a big step forward to the quarter-finals.

"We should savour this win and then make sure we rest for the Germany game. That won't be easy either."

Having seen Germany dismantle England 4-1 earlier in the day, Maradona is well aware of the task his side faces in the quarter-final, as Argentina look to avenge their defeat to Germany at the same stage in 2006.

That clash was a controversial one as well, with Argentina losing in a penalty shootout before tempers flared as players left the ground, leading to an all-in melee.

"We know Germany are a different team to Mexico, they are stronger," Maradona added.

"They played an open game against England and we must take stock of our situation on Monday and see how we have come out of this match, how the players are feeling and try to put together the right team to showcase our talents

Livewire Tevez riding high

In the space of three short months Argentina’s Carlos Tevez has gone from fringe player to one of the stars of a side sweeping all before them in South Africa.

In his journey from the Buenos Aires neighbourhood of Fuerte Apache to English club Manchester City, Carlos Tevez has had to battle every inch of the way, frequently overcoming adversity to shine in one of the world’s top leagues. Those selfsame fighting qualities have also stood him in good stead on the international stage, and are helping him perform with distinction at South Africa 2010.

“It’s impossible to leave him out of the starting line-up boys,” said national coach Diego Maradona on the eve of the opening game with Nigeria, answering the media’s queries about Tevez’s inclusion. “What do you want me to do? He’s playing so well. He’s in electric form at the moment.” Four games later and El Apache has answered all the doubters, scoring twice against Mexico on Sunday evening to add further weight to Maradona’s argument.

“I’m better prepared than ever for this tournament and fortunately the results are there for everyone to see,” he said after helping sink the Mexicans at Soccer City. “I’ve shown I’m not dead.”

Tevez’s two-goal salvo caps quite a turnaround in his fortunes and comes just three months after admitting his form was not good enough to warrant a place in the national side.

The Manchester City forward sent his team into the lead against the Mexicans, heading home at the end of a move he had started with Lionel Messi, and then all but settling the game seven minutes into the second half with a spectacular strike from outside the area.

“I needed a game like that,” he said after being named the Budweiser Man of the Match. “Diego [Maradona] told me he wanted me to play more as a forward and to not drop deep like a midfielder, but tracking back is something that comes naturally to me.”

As well as his brace, Tevez also ran tirelessly for his side and linked up well with his team-mates before being substituted by Juan Sebastian Veron. It was a change he did not appear to enjoy making: “I shouldn’t have pulled a face when I came off but nobody likes being substituted when they’re playing well. That said, I’d like to make my apologies public now: my team-mates shouldn’t have to see me looking annoyed.”

Revenge on the menu?
Carlitos is one of the survivors from the team that was knocked out by the host nation at Germany 2006. Yet with Argentina through to a quarter-final rematch with the Germans, his main objective now is not to gain revenge on the three-time champions but to get more time on the pitch than he enjoyed four years ago.

“I give absolutely everything for this jersey and I run my socks off on the pitch just to keep my place,” added the man of the moment. “This is the best form I’ve ever been in for the national side and I hope to keep this going for a long time yet. It’s going to be a great game against the Germans but we shouldn’t be looking on it as a chance for revenge. We need to take it easy and learn from the mistakes we made in 2006.”

In cementing his position as the ideal partner for Lionel Messi in the Albiceleste attack, Tevez has also earned the admiration of his team-mates. “He can win you a game in a single move,” said central defender Nicolas Burdisso, while Mexico keeper Oscar Perez had cause to regret the Argentinian livewire’s hand in events in Johannesburg: “He finished the game off with a tremendous goal.”

All in all not a bad night’s work for the kid from the back streets of Buenos Aires.

Germany-England

Of all the great FIFA World Cup™ fixtures, Germany v England is one of the games guaranteed to captivate the entire footballing world.

Laden with a rich and tumultuous history, the match has featured some of the true legends of the game. Franz Beckenbauer and Bobby Moore were the towering personalities in England's sole FIFA World Cup™ triumph to date, at Wembley in the 1966 Final. Gerd Muller fired the extra-time winner when West Germany came back from 2-0 down to win 3-2 in the quarter-finals four years later in Mexico. The Germans prevailed on penalties in the Italy 1990 semi-finals, before going on to claim their third world crown. This time round, Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein provides the setting for the latest instalment in an enduring rivalry, which many on both sides would doubtless have preferred to see played later in the competition.

Germany's young team won Group D after a rollercoaster ride through the section. The critics were purring after a scintillating 4-0 victory over Australia, but a 1-0 defeat by Serbia brought the team back to earth with a bump. As it turned out, a deserved 1-0 victory over Ghana ultimately saw Die Nationalmannschaft through. As for England, the squad arrived in South Africa bristling with stars at the zenith of their careers, all of them determined to make up for past disappointments on the international stage. However, seemingly cramped by the weight of expectation, Fabio Capello's men scrambled to second spot in Group C with a crucial 1-0 win against Slovenia in their final match, following a 1-1 draw with USA and a frustrating stalemate against Algeria.

The game
Germany–England, Round of 16, Mangaung/Bloemfontein, 16.00

Both teams will take heart from weathering a crisis at the finals. Germany and England are fired up and confident of removing the first major obstacle on their path to glory. In public at least, both camps are professing delight at crossing swords so early in the knockout stages: a keen sense of anticipation and history in the making is, we are told, the dominant emotion. However, both Germany boss Joachim Low and his England counterpart Capello face potential selection difficulties. Bastian Schweinsteiger, a revelation so far in front of the Germany back four, is rated highly doubtful with injury, as is full-back Jerome Boateng. Striker Cacau is definitely out after rupturing a stomach muscle in training, but Miroslav Klose returns from suspension. For England, Wayne Rooney has lost form at the wrong time and is also carrying a knock on the ankle, as are Aaron Lennon and Michael Carrick.

Players to watch
Philipp Lahm v Steven Gerrard

The Bayern Munich and Liverpool men are unlikely to go head-to-head very often during the match, as Lahm operates wide on the Germany right and Gerrard, though he may be asked to play on the left, prefers to go through the middle. But both captains will be required to keep cool and show genuine leadership qualities when the emotional temperature inevitably starts to rise. Each must fire his troops up to the right level of intensity and determination without pushing matters to boiling point. This is a real test for the rookies, as both Lahm and Gerrard are wearing the armband for the first time at a major tournament as they deputise for injured duo Michael Ballack and Rio Ferdinand respectively.

The stat
27 – The number of times Germany and England have met in full internationals over the years according to FIFA's statistics. The Three Lions have won 12 and the Germans ten – though Germany have also triumphed on penalties in two matches which ended as draws after extra time.

What they said
"It would be a terrible mistake to underestimate them just because they had a few problems in their group. They may well raise their game for the knockout matches. We have no need to be in awe, and we certainly have no reason to fear them. We respect them of course, but we're not afraid," Lukas Podolski, Germany striker.

"I think we can go all the way this time. I've never felt it like this before in other tournaments. I thought it was an excellent performance against Slovenia and we can't wait to get to grips with Germany," Joe Cole, England midfielder.
