The South Americans, who lifted the tropy win 1950, are already having their best World Cup since reaching the semi-finals in 1970, but Tabarez insists his men will have to improve their all round game if they are to make the last four once again.
"The important thing is balance," he said. "Not only winning the game in attack, but also defending well too. Attacking and defending well are inextricably linked."
Uruguay started their SA2010 campaign slowly with a 0-0 draw against France, but have picked up the pace since then with three impressive wins on the bounce.
Their coach now believes that Ghana will prove to be his side's toughest opponents to date, as the contest reaches its crucial final stages.
"Each time it is more difficult to win," Tabarez explained. "Neither team has won the game beforehand. As you approach the end of the tournament the differences between the teams decreases.
"Ghana have good potential. They are quick, have good technique and can dribble well on the run. We don't have any guarantee of victory but we will do everything possible to be well prepared.
"They are playing their second consecutive World Cup and have expectations of reaching the semis," he added.
"Because of that motivation and the desire to become the first African nation to reach that stage, we will find a stronger rival."
