Two successive come-from-behind draws and a last-gasp winner over Algeria had set the blood a pumping in U.S. fans.
For some, just making the knockout rounds was a success, given the general paucity of talent in U.S. ranks. Others thought the heart shown did the country proud as the sport continues to gain a foothold in the American psyche.
