Nani out of South Africa 2010

Blow for Portugal as winger Nani has been ruled out of the World Cup following an injury to his shoulder sutained in training

The Manchester United star was forced to sit out the squad's final home training session in Portugal on Saturday after falling awkwardly while attempting an acrobatic shot on Friday.

Although the 23-year-old initially tried to allay fears over his fitness and flew out with the rest of the squad to South Africa, further tests revealed he would be unable to play a part in Portugal's World Cup campaign.

A statement from the Portuguese football federation read: "After tests we conclude Nani is unfit to participate in the World Cup."

The news will come as a massive blow to coach Carlos Queiroz, as the former Sporting player had been in terrific form towards the end of the Premier League season.

Portugal play Mozambique in their final warm-up game on Tuesday before kicking off their World Cup campaign against Cote d'Ivoire on June 15.
