The away side started the match brilliantly and needed only three minutes to open the scoring. Feyenoord midfielder Denny Landzaat lost possession to Luis Suarez and the Uruguayan striker opted to test his luck from 35 yards out. Erwin Mulder failed to parry the shot and Ajax got the early goal they so desperately wanted.
Feyenoord got their first chance of the match about five minutes after the opener. Landzaat sent in a free cross toward the crowded area and Andre Bahia beat his marker before heading the ball inches over the crossbar.
Jon Dahl Tomasson should have equalised midway through the first half after being set up by Leroy Fer. However, the Danish international's weak attempt from ten yards didn't trouble Maarten Stekelenburg.
Ajax created a huge chance at the half hour mark. Suarez reached Urby Emanuelson with a pin-point cross from the right, but the winger's header bounced back off the upright. Suarez then fired in the rebound, only to see Stefan de Vrij clear the ball inches ahead of the line
Feyenoord started the second half with attacking intentions and substitute Jonathan de Guzman was the first to try his luck. The Canadian midfielder aimed high though and the chance went begging.
The hosts then thought to have netted the equaliser after Karim el Ahmadi slotted home from a narrow angle. Nevertheless, the referee opted to disallow the goal for offside.
Attacking midfielder Siem de Jong decided the match minutes after the hour mark. Demy de Zeeuw found the youngster with a superb through pass and De Jong controlled the ball with his chest before calmly placing a shot past the Feyenoord goalie.
Jon Dahl Tomasson pegged one back for Feyenoord in the 72nd minute. Jonathan de Guzman fired in a brilliant free kick from 30 yards out that hit the crossbar and Tomasson was alert to tap home the rebound from close range.
Again De Jong restored Ajax's two-goal lead only minutes later though. The Feyenoord defence allowed the attacking midfielder too much space and De Jong went for the one-two with Suarez before beating the Feyenoord glovesman with a left footed shot.
Suarez also doubled his personal tally in the last ten minutes of the game. The tricky attacker got all the time and space he needed inside the Feyenoord area and beat Mulder with a low shot at the far post.
Referee Roelof Luinge then left the pitch in the dying seconds of the game to be replaced by Kevin Blom. The highly rated ref will hang up his whistle at the end of the season and he received a nice farewell in De Kuip.
