Japan forward Takayuki Morimoto says a strong performance in South Africa could pave the way for a high profile transfer
Morimoto was a child prodigy, making his professional debut when he was just 15 and was compared to Brazil star Ronaldo.
But he struggled to hold down a place for Serie A side Catania in the 2009/10 season.
The 22-year-old believes that a good showing at the World Cup could reignite a career which once saw him linked to Manchester United.
"I'll try to make good preparations and give my all at the World Cup," Morimoto said.
"I'm a forward, so I want to score.
"I know a lot of people are watching the World Cup, so I'll try to show my potential."
Morimoto made his debut for Japan last year, and scored his first goal in a 5-0 victory over Togo.
Appearing in Group E at the World Cup, Japan will face the Netherlands, Cameroon and Denmark.
