Nani ready to lead Portugal

Nani ready to lead Portugal
Manchester United winger claims he has 'matured' as a player and is prepared to help Portugal challenge for glory in South Africa

The 23-year-old has impressed at Old Trafford this season having struggled to make an impact in previous seasons since joining the Red Devils from Sporting Lisbon in 2007.

Nani chipped in with some big goals as he helped United push Chelsea all the way for the Premier League title and the winger admits he was pleased with his performances for his club side this season.

The Portugal star expressed his disappointment at narrowly missing out on domestic success, but emphasised his desire to achieve something special in South Africa with his country having developed as a player.

"It was a pain not to win the Premier League with United but personally I am satisfied with the level of my season," said Nani.

"I arrive like a more mature player and more experienced. This could be important for my work with Portugal in the World Cup.

"The World Cup is not easy but we are obliged to improve our performance in comparison with Euro 2008.

"I have much more morale and I am prepared for any challenge in South Africa. My dreams passed me by but it is important to be men in this team.

"Our first big final in the World Cup will be the very first day against Cote d'Ivoire.

"That is key for us if we really believe that Portugal is capable of a big competition in South Africa."
