Venue guide: Soccer City

Soccer City Stadium

Soccer City Stadium is located in Johannesburg and was constructed in 1987. It has the honor of hosting the opening match at South Africa 2010 and the final itself on July 11 2010.

In preparation for the 2010 World Cup finals the stadium has undergone significant renovations which have increased its capacity from 80,000 to 94,700. The existing upper tier is now extended around the whole stadium and a new roof will provide more cover for spectators. The only remaining structure from the original stadium is the West Stand, and the new stadium's design resembles a Calabash which is an African cooking pot.

The Johannesburg Soccer City Stadium will be used to host a total of eight matches at South Africa 2010 - five first round matches, a second round match, quarter final and the World Cup final itself.
