SA2010 hopeful set for heartbreak

Defenders Juan Carlos Valenzuela and Adrian Aldrete were dropped from the original 26-man group set for Mexico's European pre-World Cup tour.

One unfortunate Mexico player will have to be axed from Javier Aguirre's squad after he reduced his preliminary group to 24 players
With Aguirre due to name his 23-man squad for South Africa soon, the 24 hopefuls have just over a week to stake their claim for a spot at the World Cup.

A statement from the Mexican football federation read: "We appreciate the dedication, discipline, professionalism and commitment of the two gentlemen (Valenzuela and Aldrete) during the training camp and in the team's friendly matches."

Mexico will face England, the Netherlands, Gambia and Italy before the start of the tournament in South Africa, giving Aguirre plenty of opportunities to examine his squad and finalise his World Cup preparations.

"In this final stage of preparation, it is vital to have the whole group and that the coaching staff counts on all of the elements to keep working towards their objectives," said Mexican football federation executive Nestor De La Torre.
